Antique, Tri-panel Screen, Attributed to James Gillray,

Medium: paper on leather

Victorian fanciful decoupage images were added
Size: 3 panels, each 60×22- set in wooden frames and leather bound
3 front panels and center back panel with art
2 back, side panels in leather
Purchased: mid 1970’s London, England shipped to Kaufman’s Department Store Pittsburgh, Pa
for “Le Gran Tour” Event and Art Exhibit
Current owner, purchased from the Pittsburgh Art Exhibit

Price: $700US

The screen was purchased in London by the Pittsburgh Department Store, Kaufmann’s, for their storewide event known as “Le Gran Tour”. In 2004, the New York Public Library held an exhibition of the English Caricature Art by James Gilray,(1756-1815). Having read and seen images in the New York times coverage of the Gilray Exhibit, I believe the screen is quite similar in the satirical style of caricature art of the Victorian Era. The first owner embellished panels with additional papers from 1890’s.
